Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid Provides 112MPGe

If you haven't seen the official commercial yet, feel free to check it out on our main page. As of the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, Toyota has officially expanded the Prius into a family. These include the larger Prius minivan, the original Prius, and the electric plug-in Prius.

The Prius Plug-In will have an electric-only driving range of 14.3 miles and fuel consumption pegged to 112 miles per gallon equivalent. The plug-in also sports a 4.4-kWh lithium ion battery back which, when depleted, switches to hybrid mode. This shouldn't happen all that often, though, considering the plug-in's battery can be fully recharged in less than 1.5 hours.

In terms of performance, the plug-in Prius can pump out 134 horsepower, which is enough to push the hubrid from 0-62 miles per hour in 10.7 seconds and tops out at 112 mph. Hoepfully that should be enough even for the speediest of consumers. The Prius Plug-in will officially go on sale in early 2012 in Japan, the U.S, and Europe. One of the most important aspects of the Prius Plugin, though, will be the price tag. The exact figures are still unknown, but some are expecting the Prius plugin price to come in at less than $30,000. That would make it one of the most affordable electric cars on the market.
